Environmental Science Institute for Indiana Teachers
Eligibility, Responsibility, Incentives,
and Logistics
Who is Eligible: High School teachers from the state of Indiana who teach earth science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, language arts and math. We encourage applications from teams of 2-4 teachers made up of a combination of science (earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics), math, and language arts teachers. 

Where: The Environmental Science Institute for Indiana teachers will be conducted on the campus of Purdue University, with field studies in Celery Bog, West Lafayette and in Burnett Creek in Battle Ground. 

What: You will enhance your understanding of environmental science issues, concepts, and improve your inquiry skills for investigating the environment, by performing local environmental research. Projects will address real-world problems in the Celery Bog wetland and Burnett Creek watershed. At the same time you will improve your curricular, pedagogical, and assessment knowledge for integrating environmental research and science into your classroom. 

When: The summer program runs from June 14 to 25, 1999. Academic year requirements: 2 days (Friday and Saturday) April 30-May 1, 1999; 2 days (Friday and Saturday) Fall 1999; 2 days Spring 2000; attendance/presentation at HASTI 2000.
Responsibilities
  • attend the two week institute, academic year workshops, and HASTI presentation,
  • develop and use ideas created during the institute in your classroom,
  • contribute inquiry and issues-based pedagogy and assessment tasks to resource binder, and
  • complete all institute assignments and assessments that are developed during the institute.
Incentives:
  • $60/day stipend ($720 based on institute attendance and successful completion of project requirements),
  • lodging/meals during two week institute and academic year workshops,
  • instructional and assessment materials and ideas,
  • graduate Credit (1 credit Earth and Atmospheric Science and 1 credit Curriculum and Instruction) will be available at participant expense for the summer institute, and
  • resource binder for teaching about wetlands, streams and watersheds.
