Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences
Strategic Plan: 2022-2027
EAPS conducts globally recognized world-class research in four of Purdue’s most interdisciplinary programs: Geology & Geophysics, Planetary Sciences, Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, and Environmental Geosciences to help our local and global communities understand our dynamic and ever-changing world and beyond to our planetary neighbors. We nurture a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population within an inclusive departmental culture, leading them to be highly valued by graduate schools and employers, and our alumni continue to make significant contributions in academia, industry, and government.
Strategic Initiatives
Diversity
- Create an inclusive departmental culture that is supportive of new and current members and their diverse identities and strives for a department to represent the diverse community that Purdue serves as a land-grant institution.

Science
- Develop planetary Exploration and Spacecraft Missions: Strive to be a leader in the exploration of our solar system and beyond with new missions, observations, and samples, and promote a cross-campus consortium on space exploration to connect and expand space exploration research efforts across Purdue.
- Illuminate interconnections between earth’s interior and surface: Lead studies in the evolution of lithospheric systems, emphasizing interconnections and cycles among processes from the mantle through to the surface and enhance the interdisciplinary study of the interplay between the evolution of tectonics, surface environments, climate, and life.
- Integrate Atmospheric, Climate, and Environmental Sciences for a Sustainable Future: Develop transdisciplinary Earth System research to assess drivers and impacts of climate change and become a leader in the science of seasonal weather and climate prediction and its application to predicting and mitigating environmental and societal risks.
- Become an agile science incubator: Develop core research and educational programs in the emerging fields of data science, astrobiology, and paleoclimate.

Education
- Increase the diversity of our students and promote an equitable and inclusive educational environment producing undergraduate students who are well-trained in theory and practice and graduate students who can do independent, interdisciplinary world-class research.
