2020-21 EAPS Awards Banquet presented virtual due to pandemic

The Annual EAPS Awards Banquet has again been presented virtually this year due to the pandemic. Because there were awards to be presented and students to be celebrated, EAPS decided to move the awards banquet online and have a virtual two week ceremony on social media. Awards were presented in video format on the EAPS social media channels Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram Monday through Friday from April 19 through April 30, 2021.
Kicking off the Virtual EAPS Awards, Department Head Dr. Daniel Cziczo presented a video message to students and the department recognized EAPS Ambassadors: Aubrey Bennett, Emily Coffin, Bridget Zapinski, Mili Jha, Joseph Heidenreich, Emma Rogers, John Gucwa, Jasmine Singh, Brandi Daddario, Jordan MacIsaac, Jefferson Hughes, McKenzie Haneline, and Stephanie Voelker.
The 2020-21 EAPS Awards are as follows:
Henry Silver Freshman Scholarships
Awarded to Mia Keller and Margaret Veak
This scholarship was established in honor of Henry Silver, a 1934 Purdue alumnus. The award is presented to an incoming freshman student(s) in environmental geosciences.
Neil and Rita Stillman Earth Science Scholarship
Awarded to Charles Menard
This scholarship was established by Neil W. and Rita K. Stillman to support one or more incoming freshman who have demonstrated academic merit electing to major in one of the following earth science concentrations: Geology and Geophysics, Environmental Geoscience, or Earth/Space Science Education.
Kathryn Pokorny Scholarships 2020-21
Awarded: Fall 2020 to Danielle Harr and Ellena Walker
Awarded: Spring 2021 to Ashlynne Gary and Rebecca Schuman
This scholarship was established in memory of Kathryn Pokorny, who was to be an EAPS freshman in Fall 1999 to fulfill her lifelong dream to become a meteorologist. It is awarded to an incoming undergraduate student.
Geology Graduate Award (established by Mobil Oil)
Awarded to: Christopher Calvelage and Hunter Vannier
This award was established by Mobil Oil and is given to a graduate student(s) who wishes to pursue a career in the geology field.
William J. Hinze Graduate Award in Exploration Geophysics
Awarded to: Juliana Peckenpaugh and Wenjing Wang
This award was established in recognition of Dr. Hinze's 75th birthday and for his contributions as a professor in EAPS for 25 years. Presented to students studying exploration geo-physics including the investigation or application of geophysical techniques that are used to determine Earth structure and properties.
June L. and Tan (Mark) Sun Chen Research Scholarship in ATMS
Awarded to: Joseph Robinson, Valeria Garcia, and Funing Li
This is a research merit-based scholarship established by Purdue alumnus Tan Sun (Mark) Chen in honor of his wife Jun to support a graduate and undergraduate atmospheric science student.
Henry Silver Graduate Scholarship
Awarded to: Susan Beveridge
Established in honor of Henry Silver, a 1934 Purdue Alumnus. Presented to a graduate student in environmental geosciences including environmental aspects of Atmospheric Science, Hydrogeology, and Engineering Geology.
EAS Undergraduate Scholarship
Awarded to: Ruthanne (Linnea) Orr, Sneha Nachimuthu, John Richardson, Natalie Schaefer, Rachel Culver, and Emersyn Harriman
This scholarship was established to recruit outstanding Freshman Solid Earth or Atmospheric Science students into the Undergraduate program.
Terry R. West Scholarship
Awarded to: Christopher Calvelage, Wenjing Wang, and Sneha Nachimuthu
This award was established in recognition of Dr. West's 40 years of teaching geology at Purdue University. Presented to students pursuing a degree in the applied geological sciences, involving Engineering/Environmental Geology, Hydrogeology, or Geophysics.
Gerald H. Krockover EAPS Scholarship
Awarded to: Emma Rogers
This award is presented to students with at least a 3.3 overall GPA in honor of Gerald H. Krockover. Preference given to students interested in development and presentation of EAPS research projects.
Gerald H. Krockover Graduate Fellowship
Awarded to: Hunter Vannier
This fellowship was established in August 2011 recognizing Dr. Krockover's 42 years of teaching at Purdue University. Presented to a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding academic merit and an interest in K-12 outreach education.
Donald W. Levandowski Memorial Scholarship in Geology
Awarded to: Stephanie Menten
Funded by relatives and friends in memory of Professor Levandowski, faculty member and Department Head of EAPS for many years. Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate or a first-year graduate student who is pursuing research in surface mapping, remote sensing, field mapping, or applied geology.
Darrell Leap Hydrogeology Graduate Research Award
Awarded to: James Haber
This award was established in 2016 in memory of Darrell I. Leap, EAPS faculty member. The purpose of this fund is assist graduate students with expenses related to hydrogeology working in the field or presenting their research at professional meetings and conferences.
Cedric J. Newby Award
Awarded to: Wenjing Wang and Christopher Calvelage
This award was established in honor of Cedric J. Newby, a 1923 graduate of Civil Engineering who worked as a Plane-table Engineer and was Head of the Humble Oil Exploration Section at Humble Oil and Refining Company in Houston. Presented to students pursuing a degree in solid-earth geosciences leading to professional employment as a geophysicist.
Atmospheric Science Graduate Student Award
Awarded to: Jie Chen
This is awarded to a student demonstrating outstanding scholarship and research achievement in Atmospheric Sciences.
Michael C. Gardner Memorial Award
Awarded to: Amanda Rudolph, James Haber, and Chris Calvelage
This award is funded by relatives and friends in the oil industry in memory of EAS geology graduate student Michael Gardner. Presented to a graduate student whose research is field-oriented in the areas of structure/tectonic and stratigraphy/sedimentation.
David and Janet Leary Undergraduate Field Work Award
Awarded to: Nicholas Regier
This scholarship was established by David A. and Janet Leary for students enrolled in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences to support undergraduate field-based research/experience, including, but not limited to, field camp.
Henry Silver Undergraduate Scholarship
Awarded to: Adriana Brown
Established in honor of 1934 Purdue alumnus Henry Silver, this award is presented to undergraduate students in environmental geosciences.
Wilton Melhorn Undergraduate Scholars Award
Awarded to: Brandon Herr
This award was established in honor of Wilton Melhorn, a former EAPS faculty member and Department Head. Awarded to an undergraduate student who excels in academics.
Ned Smith Field Camp Award
Awarded to: Lainey Colglazier and Emma Rogers
This award is presented to students attending a field camp in earth sciences and who have demonstrated academic proficiency in their field of study.

This award was established by EAPS Alums Ron Parratt and Bill Reid to recognize an EAPS Earth science undergraduate student for academic merit.
Jeff and Nina Ahbe Scholarship Grant in Geosciences

A merit scholarship established by EAPS alumnus Jeff Ahbe and his wife Nina to support an EAPS student(s) who embodies the hard work and dedication to furthering their educational studies in geoscience.
